Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, Sutherland began his acting career in the 1960s, appearing in Canadian and American television and films. His breakthrough role came with Robert Altman's 'MASH' (1970), where he played Hawkeye Pierce, an irreverent army doctor during the Korean War.
